The Elathur Lake in Erode has been officially declared the state’s third Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS) under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
It covers around 37.42 hectares, and hosts roughly 5,000 birds during the migratory season, with 187 bird species recorded.
Among the species found are endangered or near-threatened ones like the steppe eagle, greater spotted eagle and woolly-necked stork.
Why this matters: This recognition gives stronger protection to the area, raising its ecological profile and potentially promoting bird-tourism and conservation efforts in the district.
Tip for locals/interested persons: If you’re a bird-watcher or eco-tourist, this site may be worth a visit (with appropriate permissions) and you might keep an eye on district conservation announcements for guided visits.
